Name/Nickname: Laure

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Fai D. Flourite
Canon: Tsubasa World Chronicles
Point taken from canon: Just before the series starts

Age: He looks around 23, however is estimated to be just over his first hundred years. His exact age is unknown.
Gender:
Male.

Appearance:
Moderately tall at 5’11” and only 128 pounds, Fai has a lithe, lean build and moves with a natural grace. He has seemingly flawless ivory skin (though a close inspection of his hands and feet reveal a thin scars down his fingertips and beneath his toes) and just a shade longer than shoulder length pale blond locks, with long bangs framing his face, often falling over his right eye. His eyes are a brilliant shade of ice blue that see much and give away far less.

Personality: Initially, Fai gives the impression that he is rather happy-go-lucky and utterly carefree. The quick, easy smile and ready laughter makes it easy for him to become on friendly terms with just about anybody. And while he seems to be lighthearted and playful, he also appears to be someone who is always caring and kind towards those around him.

There is very little he takes seriously, less that causes him to fight seriously, and far less that will stop him from  using his magic - especially to protect others. One fight and it's obvious that though he's an experienced fighter, well versed as more of a defensive combatant - yet blatantly obvious that while his style is both acrobatic and graceful, it's also apparent that he rarely fights with anything remotely resembling seriousness... unless the lives of his four companions are at risk. He's more prone to laugh and dodge than strike back or attack at all, even with the most skilled opponents, like the undefeated Kurogane.

In truth, he's had over a century to hone his skill with both hand-to-hand combat and his magic. In the rare instance that he's forced to become serious, any and everything around him can become a weapon (to include such things as using darts to kill oni, streetlamps, or even bow and arrows.) He's most proficient with a serrated sword that can extend into a whip that he keeps sealed in his palm.

Fai is always guarded - he's exceptionally careful to maintain the walls between himself and everybody else - something easier to accomplish behind the barrier of a friendly smile and joking demeanor. Any attempt at gleaning personal information from him results in evasive non-answers, dismissive jokes, and smooth lies. He diligently hides his past and his concerns and worries from any and everyone beyond his companions.

Although, as they traveled, he became closer to Syaoran, Sakura, and Korugane, he often gave the 'children' helpful advice and displayed an unintentional concern - and from the start, he teased Kurogane with a chipper relentlessness. He constantly calls him ridiculous, nonsensical nicknames such as "Kuro-rin" and "Kuro-tan", and even “Kuro-daddy” to set off the man’s temper and hold him at arm’s length.

Hidden behind the smile, he shoulders a deep emotional burden that has lead him to fear letting people close to his heart and is only just now learning to properly place value on his own life, having believed for so long that he was himself to be a ‘cursed twin of misfortune’. There is a disconnect between him and those around him, a failure to understand or accept the finer nuances of bonds between individuals, further hampered by that old belief that anyone who gets close to him will only fall under the same curse he believes he afflicted upon his country of Valeria, as well as the one that drove Ashura-ou mad in Celes.

His distance and his lies, his stubborn refusal to accept anyone else into his heart save the twin who already resides there and his companions, all stem from the deep-seated belief that his regard is a slow-working poison - that whether it's through his attachment or his magic, he's incapable of nothing but destruction. Intentional or not.

Abilities/Strengths: Fai was born with a natural ability to command and control magic, stored and focused through the ice-blue shade of his eyes - as was true of all the ruling members of Valeria. The twins, however, were each born with enough raw power as to rival the stronger Elder Emperor even as newborns.

The extent of his abilities is never clearly defined, however, it is stated that there are only three characters in the entire Tsubasa series that are stronger than him: Yuko, the Dimensional Witch, Clow Reed, and Fei Wong Reed.

It is inferred that it was his magic that, while nullified in the valley, was still powerful enough to keep him alive, underdressed and with minimal to no sustenance until Ashura took him from there. He’s shown to be able to not only sense living presences around him, but they type of power they hold – be they gods, dreemseers, or other magicians.

Examples of his power include learning every spell in Celes Country in a few short years – granted the D rank to denote his position as senior-most mage in the country while still a young teenager; redirecting raging avalanches around entire villages effortlessly; creating an artificial life-form in the image of his mother to protect Fai’s dead body; sealing a powerful king in a magical dual; the ability to, unlike Mokona (the being responsible for moving their group  from dimension to dimension in search of Sakura’s memory feathers), travel independently through dimensions and control his destination.

With only a whistle, he created a barrier strong enough to block out a platoon of Magical Enforcers, casting high-powered capture spells, and magical guardian beasts hurling their own magic at them in a country where the ability to use magic was the norm, so that Mokona could call forth the seal that enabled them to jump to the next dimension.

The clearest indication, however, is LATER in the manga, after his companion Kurogane kills an awakened Ashura, when Fai is incapable of doing so, and triggers the second curse to go into effect against Fai’s will. At this point, the Syaoran-clone has long since stolen one of Fai’s eyes, eating it and HALF of Fai’s magic, Fai has been turned into a vampire, yet with only half of his former power and after another magical dual with Ashura, he is still able to collapse and destroy the entire world that Celes Country resides in. In that moment, he was able to use his ability to command dimensional travel to start to send Syaoran and Sakura on to another world – they were already disappearing when he tried to add Kurogane to the trip.

Only then did his magic give out.

They managed to escape through other means, but the entire planet was still collapsed by Fai’s magic.

Weaknesses: Fai has several emotional triggers – not the least of which is his fear of anyone finding out he’s Yuui, because of his unshakable resolve that this life was the one stolen by him from his twin, Fai. He’s doing his level best to let ‘Yuui’ be the one to disappear, so that he can give Fai back his life properly one day.

He was once petrified of Ashura-ou reviving from the spell Fai cast on the king to leave him in a sleeping stasis, where he had hoped his mentor to find rest and peace, and remember himself.

Yet he when the moment came, he could not bring himself to kill Ashura – the one person in the long span of their lives that has offered the twins (no matter the fact that Fai was dead) a home filled with real kindness and affection, even if Yuui (Fai) failed to fully understand or recognize it for what it was. Kurogane eventually does kill Ashura-ou, in order to save Fai, and it's only after this that Fai begins to accept that he can live for himself.

For all that he can use spells, incantations, potions, and even sound and music based magics, he’s only capable of using attack and defensive-type magics. He’s studied and even memorized healing magics and spells, yet is incapable of using them.

Defining Quote(s):

"If we leave this place, we'll be able to use magic. If we leave this place, we'll go to another country. We'll go! The two of us together, Fai!" ~Yuui(Fai) shouted up to his brother from the valley.

“Is it a sin, just to be born? All we ever did was be born together. Just to be born...” ~Yuui(Fai), after his uncle (the Elder Emperor) killed everyone in Valeria, then committed suicide before him.

“If you want to go somewhere, you can go by yourself. There’s no need to wait and ask someone.” (Kurogane, about the lyrics of a song he and Fai hear while listening to a singer at a bar.) Fai’s response: “Kuro-chan, you’re the only one that would do that, you know. How should I put it? …Because I, too, have been waiting. Waiting for someone who can stay by my side.”
